Yowis Ben is a comedy movie that was made under Starvision Plus Production and Bayu Eko Moektito or well-known as Bayu Skak as the moviemaker. The title of the movie is taken from Javanese language which means “let it be”. The term yowis ben in the movie is not used as what it means in which the words can be used to express a feeling when you can just let it go something after you did your best. In the movie, the words yowis ben is used for naming a group of a band (ben means band). The movie is a sequel movie that includes "Yowis Ben 1", released in 2018 and 'Yowis Ben 2', released in 2019. Both of the movies have a continuing plot that cannot be separated from each other. "Yowis Ben 1" tells about the main character’s journey during senior high school and "Yowis Ben 2" tells about the main character’s life in pursuing his dream after he graduated from a university.

The Language Use 

"Yowis Ben" the movie used Javanese language spesifically Malangan language as the main language in the movie since the setting of the movie is Malang. The use of Malangan language in the movie has some pros and cons. Some people think that the movie shows off a particular culture because of the use of Javanese language. As we know, there are a lot of ethnic groups in Indonesia, they might be questioning the reason why the film must use Javanese language. On the other hand, another people give positive response to the film. For them, the movie is very good in a way that the film tried to raise local traditions that may affect another movie production to make the same movie with a different local background in Indonesia. This is one of the ways that can be used to preserve local traditions.  

The Conflict

The main conflict of "Yowis Ben 1" is about friendship and love. Here, Bayu as the main character has to choose whether he should stay with his friends and his band or he should pursue his love. It begins when Bayu met Susan, played by Cut Meyriska. He chased after her and in the end, he has to choose those choices. Bayu, then choose his band and his friends at the end of the film. Whereas the conflict of "Yowis Ben 2" is not really focused on one particular topic. The conflict is somewhat messier than in the first movie. For me, the first movie is better than the second one. Instead of the conflict, the flow of the story in the first movie is logical and well-organized. In the second movie, there is a part that is missing like how Bayu’s college life because it is suddenly showed Bayu’s graduation party. 

Characterization 

The selected actors and actresses are not really suitable for each role, but this incompatibility makes the movie became funnier. For example, Brandon Salim who played as Nando seems to be awkward when he spoke in Javanese language. Although the way how he speaks is a bit awkward, but this is the point that makes him looked funny. When he speaks in Javanese, it sounds cute in addition to his facial expression that supports the situation. The other character is Susan, played by Cut Meyriska. The character of Susan is not really appealed when it is played by Cut Meyriska. It might be because she used to act or play as the protagonist character in soap opera which is totally different from Susan’s character. Although she does not suit the character, the way how she speaks especially when cursing is very funny because she has flat expression.

That’s it that I want to share with you, guys. If you are not in a good mood and need a mood booster, you can just watch the movie in Iflix freely. I guarantee you will laugh out loud. Trust me! 😉

 

[MooSTAR] Netflix's Today Handsomeness

People these days have been shifting their preferences from watching television to Netflix since it is more practical. Netflix can be accessed not only through smart TV but also through your gadget which makes it easier for people to access it. In addition to that, Netflix also provides many kinds of movies and TV series. What makes it different is that Netflix has its own movies and TV series called Netflix Originals that you cannot find anywhere else. Through this program also, Netflix releases new faces of actors who stole women's and girls’ hearts because of their handsomeness. Here are two actors from the author’s pick:

Noah Centineo

Noah Gregory Centineo, a 23-year-old guy and an American actor who is famous for his role on “To The Boys I’ve Loved Before” which is an original Netflix movie released in 2018. Noah’s name becomes famous after he plays a character named Peter Kavinsky. He also plays in another Netflix movie with the title “Sierra Burgess Is A Loser” as Jamey, and other movies such as “The Perfect Date”, “Swiped”, and “Charlie’s Angels”.

For you who have watched the movies that I have mentioned, we can see that Noah is able to play different characters, as a romantic boy, a playboy, a sporty boy, and many more. However, from the image of Noah that we have seen from the movies, he is actually a smart guy. Really. From some interviews, I find that he likes to read both fictional and non-fictional books in his free time. He admits that he likes to write something romantic and philosophical on his twitter (@noahcent) and by that, we can also see that he is a critical person. Many people call him a love expert.

The fact that Noah becomes famous through the Netflix movie “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” and NOW, Peter is back in the “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” sequel which is “To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You”. We get our Peter back. Don’t worry. Look forward to Noah’s future movies, guys!

Move to the next one is a British actor named Asa Maxwell Thornton Farr Butterfield, or just Asa Butterfield. He is not a Netflix actor before he plays in “Sex Education” which is a Netflix series that released in 2019 for Season 1. He plays as Otis. He plays some roles in other movies also, like “HUGO”, “Ender’s Game”, “The Space Between Us”, “Then Came You”, “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children”, and many more. He has been playing many characters in a lot of movies since he was 7 years old, and now he is 22.

From the movies that I mentioned before, Asa plays mostly an innocent boy or an innocent boy who falls in love with a girl he meets. The plots of those movies are quite serious and deep, I mean they do not really contain comedy. BUT! Who knows that Asa is the one who likes to pull a prank on set? In an interview during “Sex Education” promotion, Emma Mackey explains how Asa did a prank on her or be silly by himself on set. She says that he can suddenly make funny faces and silly moves, and once he makes her screaming on set on the first week of filming. That is the other side of Asa that we rarely see in the movie characters he plays in.

On January 17, “Sex Education” Season 2 was out on Netflix. It will be funnier and the storyline will do something to your heart and soul, it is emotional without deviating from the moral core.

[MoView] Hereditary, A Hypnotizing Horror

   This post is a MoView, shortened of Movie Review. In early 2018, we were introduced to a new level of horror from a movie written and directed by Ari Aster, Hereditary. This movie is Aster’s debut to the big screen and became a hit with his different approach to horror. This is not the kind of movie where the audiences will be fed with several jump scares or slight gore and wait for the plot twist to happen for the main character(s) in the end. Instead, it is the kind of horror that deals with psychological sense of grief, death, mental illness, and tragedy all into one.

A family drama movie

This kind of horror will keep you on your toes. Throughout the movie, you will see hidden clues spread around whether you realize it or not. These clues also called “Easter Eggs” among fans. Because it is psychological, obviously there is some thinking involved why certain things happened, and the conflict might be somewhat heavy for viewers who expected a light movie to pass time. However, for you fishes who are ready for not-so-usual stuff to happen, check out the rest of this post.

Hereditary first started as a family drama that deals with grief and terrifying secrets later which would be unfolded. Annie Graham lived with her husband, son (Peter, 16-years-old) and daughter (Charlie, 13-years-old). Annie just lost her mother, and at the funeral she said they were not quite close and her mother had led a very private life. We learned that Ellen, Annie’s mother, loved Charlie so much and Charlie was “different” from other kids. She frequently clicked her tongue, made sculpture, and one time she cut the head off a dead bird using scissors. Creepy much.

One night Peter wanted to go to a party, Annie forced to take his sister with him. Charlie ate a cake containing nuts which she was allergic to, and had a shock. On the way to the hospital with Peter driving at the front, Charlie opened the window and leaned her head. It then led to her head decapitated by a light post when Peter swerved the car to avoid a deer’s corpse. It was shocking. I remember the whole studio went silent as the audience held their breath. After a moment of shock, Peter went home with Charlie’s head still laying there. Annie learned the truth in the morning and found the head had rotten with bugs.

King Paimon

Long story short, Annie learned her mother was the leader of a demon cult. This cult’s wanted to revive Paimon (one of the eight kings of Hell). The reason Ellen favored Charlie so much was because Paimon was already inside her body since birth; hence Charlie’s strange behavior. However, Paimon needed a male body as its host and a vulnerable one. The bed had been made. After Charlie’s death, Annie became distressed and joined a support group. She befriended Joan who introduced her to spiritualism and later helped to perform a séance (a ritual to communicate to spirit, in this case, Charlie). She did not realize from there he had sacrificed her son's mental and physical health. She was only later realized Joan was part of the cult.

The climax was so complex and dark and a lot of things happened. The father died by burning, Annie was possessed and beheaded herself, and the cult coven suddenly in the attic of the house was getting crazier. To run away Peter jumped out of the window; however, when he woke up Charlie or Paimon had taken over Peter’s body. If you focused and connected all the dots in the movie, the cult had orchestrated every events in order for Paimon to live. By putting a spell on a post lamp that led to Charlie’s death so Paimon’s spirit can be free; Joan by fate met her and took advantage of Annie’s emotional state; and Paimon slowly took over Peter’s body that made him acted insane.

After the scene ended and the light turned on, I could feel the atmosphere from the studio was confused and dumbfounded. It was like waking up from a dream in which we couldn’t expect how the story will go, and it was a scary one. Hypnotizing. And not for everyone to consume. For those who have a soft heart and not that open-minded about things like cults will find this movie very disturbing. As I said before, it is psychological. and the depiction of the movie is astonishing. Supported by the great acting from the actors, the deafening yet still sound effect, and shocking camera graphics. No wonder it became a hit.

In the beginning of this new decade of 2020, trailer movies have been filling the list for the box office ever since the half-end of 2019. MULAN

Mulan Movie 2020

After the prominent live action of animated movie "Aladdin" last year, Disney will now continue to adapt Hua Mulan's 1998 film, a female character who disguised herself to be a man in order to replace his father's position in the Imperial Chinese Army who eventually become a legendary Chinese warrior. This movie involves many famous Chinese actors such as Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, and Jet Li. Mulan is directed by Niki Caro and will be released on March 27 in United States.

BLACK WIDOW

At last, fans get to watch the standalone movie of Natasha Romanoff or the so called Black Widow, one of the original members of the Avengers. This movie is the second Marvel Cinematic Universe that has a female superhero as the main character beside its pioneer, Captain Marvel that was released in 2019. The plot of the movie is said to deal with Johansson's Romanoff and her Russian past which had been shown in a split scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Black Widow that is directed by Cate Shortland will be released on May 1st.

3 years after the released movie titled Dunkirk, Christopher Nolan finally returns to present another magnificent movie called "Tenet". As the fans might know, Nolan loves to make movie by playing around with time and space, just like what he did on Inception and Memento. This time, it seems like the movie will deal with the alteration of time. John David Washington and Robert Pattinson are ready to give the audience the thrill through the actions that are said to prevent World War 3. This movie will be released in Summer, July 17th.

There are many people who think the first A Quiet Place movie has a cliffhanger ending as it does not show the resolution of the movie. That is why, this year John Krasinski is back to present the movie that he directed alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, as the actress of the movie whose character has to protect her children after the death of Krasinski's character. In this movie, the thrill will get under audience's skin as the family continues to venture the world that is full of sound-sensitive monsters. It is said that the movie will be released on March 20th.

Fast and Furious franchise is back with its 9th movie that now focuses on the family that Dominic (Vin Diesel) raised together with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) which, once again, seemed to encounter an obstacle to get a peaceful life. This time around, the actions shown in the trailer are getting more and more like a plot that should be used in movies like Mission Impossible. However, of course, fans of the franchise would watch it anyway as this movie will introduce John Cena as the villain and give the fans a lot of surprises. You can witness what those surprises are once you watch the trailer below. As for the movie, it will be released on May 22nd.
